Art:
Jean Tinguely (1925-1991)- He believed in modifying pieces of scrap metal from
machines in order to create meaningful sculptures. Jean wanted the culture to
find meaning in something that was obviously meaningless.
Max Bill (1908-1994) - A Swiss artist, continued to expand the use and ideas for "Concrete
Art" as opposed to abstract art.
Ironically, Concrete Art is the perfect art form for the Swiss because it
defines organizational skills that Switzerland chooses to live by. The Protestants
in Switzerland believe in rationality and coincidentally concrete art is based
on measurement, law, and rationality as well.
Dada Movement- This
movement, also known as Dadaism was inspired by World War I because of the repulsion
and disappointment that was caused by the war. The movement began in Zurich and
focused on visual arts, poetry, and graphic design among other art forms.
Music:
Yodeling is popularly associated with Switzerland but it did not originate in the country. Other countries such as Poland are known for yodeling. In Switzerland yodeling was used a means to communicate across the distance or as a cow call.
The Alphorn is a type of instrument that was brought to Europe by nomadic tribes from Northern Asia; it started to be used at the end of the 18th century. By adding other instruments such as the Schwyzerörgeli (a type of accordion), the Hackbrett (hammered dulcimer) and the Trümpi (Harp) Swiss folk music can be produced.
